This mini warehouse represents a true lifestyle concept: besides the sale of bright and fun clothes, also vintage furniture, biologic foods, and interesting fashion/art/food magazines and books are part of the deal. This makes the shopping experience not only fun for woman, but also pleasant for men: they can grab a bite in the food corner. 400 square meters full of fun!

This location used to be a spot where lots of people had the time of their lives in the famous nightclub Mazzo. The owners have tried to keep the space as it originally was left as much as possible. You can still feel the soul of the building so to say: industrial and raw.

10 feet is known as a Dutch creative brand; pure fashion with a funny twist. For young and older woman, who are not afraid of color and prints. They launch a new collection 4 times a year so you’ll always find new items. The owners would describe the store as “A real lifestyle concept: Fashion, Food, Furniture & Fun!

Note: Due to completion of this lifestyle store it may be closed from January till February 2009: just a few weeks!

De Pijp is lucky to have BLOND in it’s shopping area. This popular Dutch design can be found in almost every cozy, kitschy house in Holland. The huge cups and mugs for tea with happy, and mostly funny, paintings always turn a smile on your face.

Do you want something even more original? No problem. BLOND also does private orders! A personalized design for your cups, pots, bowls, or plates. Hand in a photo, and BLOND will characterize the image in a cartoon with bright colors, cookies & teabags, tree’s and flowers etc. Whatever you’d like!

Great for gifts, souvenirs, hilarious paintings, school supplies, and/or inspiration!

Note: There’s also a store of BLOND at Singel 369!

The words ‘typically Amsterdam’, ‘funny fashion’ and ‘Exota’ can easily be mentioned in the same sentence.

Their own vintage label ‘King Louie’ is sold internationally and a great success. You’ll find people wearing this label all over the Netherlands as it’s really recognizable. With the first store opened in 1985 the concept of ‘first class second hand’ was presented.

Brands as for example Carhartt, Kookai, French Connection are part of the collection. Accessories like key gadgets, necklaces, bodycremes, belts and bags decorate the place with their happy colors and designs.

Service is extremely friendly, fashionable and happy to help with any request or advice.

A visit to this shop puts a smile on your face!

This incredibly urban-hip looking little boutique is located on the Vijzelstraat, halfway between Munt square and Weteringscircuit.

Most of the products sold are from the brand Aiko, created by the duo that owns the store, but there is a sizable collection of clothing from smaller brands from around the globe.

Everything looks cartoon-like: naive, witty and sometimes cynical. The fresh and fashionable wares come at a price. A t-shirt will set you back about € 35.00 and a sweater close to € 100.00.

The clothing and the gadgets are however highly original, smart and colorful. The Hana Zuki creative studio is involved in some international projects, but it is unlikely that you will run into one of its products in another country. Take some of their stuff home as proof for the Amsterdam fashion sense.

Great shop with health and eco foodies, goodies and more stuff! Nice spot!

The “Overtoom”, the name of the street, is getting more attractive. It used to be a traffic - jammed road. Now you can go there for fun, food and shopping. And ………. they have a lot of take away goodies!

A real good new Marqt for Amsterdam.

If you decide to go shopping in Amsterdam there are some places I would advise you to go to, and some you should definitely avoid. The Kalverstraat, running from the Dam to the Munt, is one that fits into the latter category. It is always overcrowded and it is unlikely that you will find any shops there that you cannot find in another place in another country.

If you are on the Dam, don’t go there; take the Damstraat in eastern direction instead. After about half a kilometer it changes into the Nieuwe Hooghstraat, which is lined mostly with smaller clothing shops.

You won’t find any retailers from the big chains there, or in the Jodenbree straat that crosses it at the end, but independent shops offering their wares to different niches in the market. You can find shops that just sell hats, designer shoes, equipment for jugglers, and so on. I buy most of my clothes in the second hand shops in this area.

If you know your way around you can go to a specific shop to find a specific item. It is perhaps more fun not to look for anything in particular. You just might come across that perfect piece of clothing, and if you do it is likely to be something that you wouldn’t easily find anywhere else.

‘Organic Food for You’ is a nice small supermarket. You find it half way the Cornelis Schuytstraat. It offers a wide range of eco and biologic products and articles. I found a nice selection of biologic dynamic vegetables and fruits. The shop is offering a broad selection of Dutch and foreign cheeses. All kind of groceries, f.e. gluten free flour and much more.

There is also a selection of pre-packed ecological meats and meat-cuts. Fish and fish products. I personally love the selection of breads, rolls and loafs they offer. These are not house-made but are supplied by the in Holland famous ‘Vlaamsche Broodhuys’ a bakery that is specialized in organic and natural baking of bread. And yes, they have wonderful and very tasty fruit juices, fresh daily. I love the place for those special, healthy products.

Raak is probably one of the most popular shops in de Pijp. Not only people from Amsterdam, but also fashionsta’s from other cities in Holland come to Raak to provide themselves with fashionable clothing, items, jewelry, design interior, baby stuff and feminine shoes.

This small shop sells expensive wear, in addition to the exclusive jewelry.
Words to describe Raak are blond, high heeled, good quality, original, fashion, design, St.Tropez/Cannes, Chihuahua dogs and celebrities.

Within the Dutch fashion industry, Raak is also a well-established logo, promoted by several celebrities. Want to look your best? Raak is where you should go. Ladies wear only…sorry guys.

Note: A bigger store of RAAK can be found at the Leidsestraat 79, a mini warehouse with even more shopping fun!

A jewel in shoes-land! It’s located in the 9 streets (see this article).

This is the the ultimate for shoe fetisjists. Brands of hand made shoes like Crockett & Jones, Santoni, Alden, Saint Crispin’s and Edward Green are here to be bought by willing customers.

Not cheap of course, so really for the freaks, dandies and lovers of good shoes.

“Here you buy a kitchencloth, trousers or a nice roll”, says Maaike, one of the saleswoman of Sissy-Boy Homeland.

The furniture is partly new and partly ‘brocante’. The department ‘Daily’ has fresh biological bread and cheeses. There is Brandmeester coffee (famous old Dutch brand) and various olive oils of Amsterdam known olive oil supplier Meeuwig. Last but not least you find clothing of Sissy Boy. I love the shop and her attitude to todays lifestyle.

It is a visit worthwhile, also to see the this rapidly developing area of Amsterdam with modern architecture on the watershores of Amsterdam.

The place for everybody, who calls himself a Burgundian! What a selection of meat, cold cuts, pâtés, salads and sausages of all kind. They have professional and very friendly staff helps to make your choice(s).

My choice is the Iberian pork and truffle sausages and the French Limoges Côte du Boeuf. This shop is a beauty for the eye and tongue.

They have the French and Italian fresh truffles, some as big as a tennis ball. Worth the detour.

One of the Albert Cuyps hidden gems: South Miami Plaza offers everything what you haven’t thought of yet. Do you think you’ve seen/heard it all…explore your world here!

Music styles varying from Dutch and World to Blues and Rock, a never ending offer.

Wherever you look, special offers are a daily matter. 5 Dvds for 10 euros is not uncommon. Ok, don’t expect to find the newest released films and cds here…but you may find your lost samples of famous oldies or for example the Beatles in concert.  To complete your collection they also sell posters and cards of pop, tv, and filmstars.

The place does look like an old dump store, full of cheap, dusty cds, dvds, vinyl, video’s etc. But that shouldn’t hold you back. Be patient and you’ll bump into one favorite after another, and all this for the lowest prices ever!

Between the canals bordering the Jordaan, you find an area with shops, restaurants, lunch bars and pubs called “Negen Straatjes”, which translates into Nine Streets. These nine streets are: Reestraat, Berenstraat, Runstraat, Hartenstraat, Wolvenstraat, Huidenstraat, Gasthuismolensteeg, Oude Spiegelstraat and Wijde Heisteeg. They are all located in between the Singel and the Prinsengracht, running in a ninety degrees angle to the canals.

This little neighborhood is well known, nevertheless it is never really crowded. You have to be on guard for delivery trucks in the narrow streets, but you can walk from store to store in peace.

The little shops are very specialized and they sell the weirdest stuff. If you take your time, you just might find something beautiful.

When I am walking around here, looking at the little businesses, I get the feeling that they are run by people that have quit a boring job to focus on their passion. There might be a big turnover in shops that are so particular, but these streets are so widely known that a lot of them seem to be able to survive.

If you are tired of all the shops you will be sure to find a nice café or lunch bar where you can gather strength.
